Amber: What advice would you give to someone just starting to build their dream career? Melissa: Keep following your intuition. With every decision, tune in and ask yourself, “Is this a full body hell yes?” If it’s not a full body hell yes, then it’s a no. If you ignore this intuition, there will be a consequence. Amber: What is your secret to creating a dream job that is also offers a dream pay check? Melissa:
Amber: How did you discover your career path? Melissa: In 2010, I ended up in hospital sick and unhappy. After that, I studied Holistic Nutrition at IIN, Meditation, yoga teacher training, AcuEnergetics and all these amazing healing modalities. I was exposed to so much personal development and amazing teachers, that I started a blog. I just started sharing what I was learning. All these woman put their hands up saying. "I thought I was the only one struggling with these inner mean girl issues, or struggling with food or body image issues." It made me realize that we are not alone on this journey. And from there, I created e-books and workshops and courses with the intention to help and inspire women to step into their true power, unlock their full potential, and be the best version of themselves. So that's how it all started. Amber: What drives you/inspires you to do what you do? Melissa: The women. Every person who messages me that is struggling with self love, or their passion or purpose. I just want to help people. When people ask me for help i'm like, "YES, let's go and create, let's support you!" We don't have to do life on our own. When we can all come together and support each other, that's when we can really grow and evolve. Amber: Can you talk about finding balance around work? Melissa: Be mindful that you are taking good care of yourself and are in tune with your body so you can hear its messages. I'm pretty good at hearing the messages. I can take the afternoon off for a swim, walk, or to see friends, I'm good at that now, but it's taken me a while to get to that place. Amber: What does a typical work day look like for you? Melissa: I start work day at 9AM, If I'm writing a program or book, I'll sit and do that for most of the morning, take a break to make a delicious lunch, sit in the sun if I can. Then in the afternoon, I schedule meetings, podcast interviews or things that can flow a little more. A lot of successful business entrepreneurs say to do the most demanding tasks at the start of the day, that require the most brains fuel and focus. I do those task first. At the end of the day, I'm pretty good at switching off. Ive set strict boundaries...because when you're an entrepreneur and you love what you do, you can just go go go go. In the past I've burned out my adrenals, and I can’t do that anymore...So come 6 o'clock and my phone is on airplane mode, I spend the evening with my husband and my stepson, we cook dinner, we eat dinner together, and we sit around the dinner table with no phones and no tv. We talk and connect. I do the dishes while the boys chat to me, and then we jump into bed pretty early. Leo’s in bed at 7:30, and we are in bed not long after that. Amber: What would you say the number one thing is that gets in the way of someone having a successful career? Melissa: Your inner mean girl, your inner critic. Fear is going to say to you, “You're not good enough! What do you think you are doing? Nobody is going to buy your book! Nobody is going to listen to your podcast! Get over yourself!" That voice is what is going to hold you back. That voice is going to stop you. Now I'm at the point where I'm like, “I don’t care because it lights me up. If one person buys it, if one person listens, then that is one person that I helped in some way. If we master our inner mean girl, there are no limits, we can do what ever we want. It is exciting. Amber: Is your mean girl completely gone? Mel: When it comes to my mission and my vision, I am so clear with what I want to do, and I'm so laser focused, that I don’t listen to her. She still pops up in other areas. I used to believe it when she’d pop up, but now I don’t believe her, I can’t be bothered, because I don’t have time. The world needs all of us to show up and master that voice. We all need to show up fully, because when we do, we are being of service. Everyone has different forms in which they serve, but the main purpose is to be of service. Amber: Where have you had the most challenges in while growing your own business? Mel: Understanding the numbers. You've got to look at that stuff in a business. I'm not bursting to do it, but you got to be aware of it. My husband tells me my eyes glaze over. It’s not my zone of genius. So for me, it's about finding the love and the interest of it, and then just being there without my eyes glazing over. Amber:What is your master plan? How would your life look in 10 years? Mel: More. More community. More books. More connections with amazing people. More platforms. More of what I’m doing now. Just more.
